A Company with Vision

PAST AND PRESENT

Seasons Magazine has had the privileged opportunity
to take a trip in history with a company and family that has endured almost a century in eyewear development and the use of latest technology. As times and techniques have changed over the years they have become recognised in their eld as one of the most advanced eyewear experts in New Zealand.

The surname “Bell”, in this case should ‘ring a bell’, as it was family member and founder, Oscar Bell, who started trading in Optics and established Opthalmic Prescriptions NZ Limited in 1954, locating his rst premises behind the old post o ce in Victoria Street, Hamilton.

Chris Bell, son of original founder Oscar Bell and a current Director of Bell Neuhauser & (Matthews), spent six years working for Standard Optical Ltd (NZ) in the eyewear manufacturing sector where he manufactured and made lenses by hand, which in those days, lenses were usually imported to New Zealand. Chris laughs remembering the days he made sunglasses from the glass bottoms of beer bottles!

Roll around to 1975 when Chris joined his father as an optical technician and quali ed as a dispensing optician in 1979.

In 1989 they relocated to 125 Ward Street and in 1991 began trading as Bells Optical Boutique. Chris relays how working alongside his father as Bells Opticians, they enjoyed huge popularity and worked with many of the Opthalmologists across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions.

Chris points out that the Zeiss lens technology now used by Bell Neuhauser & (Matthews) is state of the art technology. It is fully customised to suit each individual’s lifestyle and personal needs, o ering improved low light vision, contrast, colour vision, and high de nition clarity.

The name “Bell” was synonymous with a standard of vision treatment for those early years, always with one eye focused on new developments and new technology to enhance options for clients through best possible techniques and treatments available.

In 2014 Chris and Peter joined with Optometrist/Director Anna Mega n and the Matthews Group to create a new innovative Optometric practice and rebranded it as ‘Bell Neuhauser & (Matthews) Optometrists.’ Anna is a great t
for the business for a number of reasons. She has worked closely with Chris and Peter for a decade now. In fact, she began her Optometry career at the original Bells Opticians practice back in 2006. The three of them work well together and compliment each others skill sets. Just as Chris and Peter have their loyal client base, Anna has also built up her loyal patient base, most of whom have now found her and followed her to the new premises. Anna shares the same principles as Chris and Peter with regards to providing the highest level of service and going above and beyond, which she sees as the advantage of being part of an independent local business. The team has also hired Roslyn Bernhard as Optical Receptionist and Dispensing-Optician-In-Training. Roslyn is a very valued member of sta , loved by patients and her colleagues, and keeps the practice running smoothly with her e ciency.

Matthews and Bell share similar philosophies. Both have a long history in optics and are both family owned businesses. They value the exibility of independent optometry and the higher care that they can give to their clients and patients alike!

Today eyewear is attributed not just to vision enhancement but also as an important fashion accessory.

Fukui, Japan is one of the three largest production regions for optical frames in the world, along with China and Italy. 97% of Japanese-made optical frames are manufactured in Fukui. Masunaga Optical premiered the production of eyeglasses in Fukui in 1905. The company founder Gozaemon Masunaga brought in skilled craftsmen from Osaka and Tokyo with the ambition of setting the optical industry solidly in place in Fukui.

He entered into the industry the hard way, and at first the eyeglasses manufactured in Fukui were regarded to be third-rate in the world. In order to raise the quality standards of the products, Gozaemon established a guild like system where full-fledged craftsmen could create their own businesses. Owing to this system, the number of eyeglass craftsmen increased gradually, and the optical industry spread all over Fukui.

There are as many as 200 manual processes involved in making an optical frame. Generally, productivity is low when one company is in charge of all the processes. However, Masunaga Optical is the only company in Japan that has a factory in charge of all processes from raw materials to production and finish in an integrated way. The integrated production system improves the detail and quality. For example, when Masunaga Optical develops a new model, the molds are always built in-house. If there is a problem in the wear comfort that can be felt only after completing one pair of glasses, it will be corrected in the previous process’

The company’s mission statement since the establishment is “We manufacture excellent eyeglasses. We want to make a profit if we can, but we don’t hesitate to take a loss. It is always in our thoughts to manufacture excellent eyeglasses.” These words are still the basis of the conduct code of employees even more than 100 years after its establishment.

How It All Began…

Fritz was born and raised in Germany on Rugen Island in the Baltic Sea. He’s a wooden boat builder by trade & has worked on sailing yachts for many years as well as designing and making a great number of objects from furniture to kite-boards.

The method Fritz uses to create each handcrafted frame originates from the traditions of wooden yacht building. In homage to this traditional craft, most of his frames are named after the yacht’s “engines”, the winds that blow around our globe.

Fritz nds making glasses appealing and challenging on many levels. A craftsman and inventor as well as entrepreneur and designer, it’s an ever-evolving process, always discovering new insight into his self-made craft. Fritz says, “Creating glasses enriches my life with beauty and meaning, two of life’s essential rewards”.
